Located in North Texas, we are a family-run ranch that raises Traditional Texas foundation bloodline AQHA and NFQHA quarter horses. These are the original old  time Texas cowhorses.

Own a piece of  history, while you still can.

Most of our herd we’ve raised on site from foals; many were born here as well. Our Quarter Horses are bred for conformation typical of the true Foundation Quarter Horse. Equally important are concentration of select Foundation Quarter Horse  bloodlines, and even temperament. These horses are known for their Cow Sense. Even foals as young they won't let a cow in  their space.

And foals come in a full range of colors – grullo, roan, buckskin, dun, black, and palomino as well as the traditional bay and sorrel. Occasionally we have older grullo, roan, and black  quarter horses for sale- be sure to ask. All our quarter horses are AQHA NFQHA and FQHR eligible or registered.

At a time when nearly any quarter horse AQHA registered without a thoroughbred way back in the pedigree is called "Foundation", our focus includes the real, original Texas foundation quarter horse bloodlines of Jessie James p-2257, Poco Bueno p-3044, King p-234, and Joe Hancock p-455 -bred to work cows.  These quarter horse bloodlines are close to the original bloodlines that started the AQHA- one of our stallions actually has Wimpy p-1 on his face papers.

Our Foundation Quarter Horse bloodlines and our horses themselves reflect all the traits that made these unique horses worthy of their own registry- the American Quarter Horse Association.

Our breeding program features stallions that are high per cent Jessie James, King p-234, and Poco Bueno foundation quarter horse bloodlines, and have it close up in their pedigree. Two of our grullo stallions are Jessie James or Poco Bueno bred. We have a grandson of Poco Bueno who also has the Foundation Quarter Horse Wimpy on his papers.   Other stallions include a black stallion that is 48% King p-234 from the late Fred Gist's breeding program.  We also have a couple of cremello greatgrandsons of Jessie James;  both are guaranteed color producers! All are high % NFQHA and are registered with the NFQHA or their foals are NFQHA and FQHR eligible.

Our breeding program has 2 goals. The first is to produce a linebred Foundation Quarter Horse foal that exhibits the characteristics of
Jessie James, Poco Bueno, or King p234.
The second breeding goal is to outcross our line bred Jessie James and Poco Bueno horses on King p 234 and Hancock quarter horses to increase stature, bone, conformation, and most importantly make the ultimate versatile working cow horse.

And a lot of the time this includes an interesting coat color.

Our mare band consists exclusively of
Jessie James, King p-234, Poco Bueno, or Joe Hancock foundation bloodlines, and are NFQHA or FQHR registered or NFQHA and FQHR eligible.. Most of our stallions and mares also have many King Ranch foundation quarter horses in their pedigree. These include Mr. San Peppy, Macanudo, Wimpy, Hired Hand, Rey Del Peppy and Rey Del Rancho, to name a few. All our horses, of course, feature Foundation Quarter Horse breeding and are eligible in any Foundation Quarter Horse registry.

The original Foundation Quarter Horse is smart, agile, and easy to handle and train.  They are also born with lots of cow sense, ready to take on a cow, even as a foal.

The "Steel Dust" bred foundation quarter horse carries on the cowboy tradition by being Texas tough, stout and hardy - no special feed, hormones shots, or pampering required.

So, Why Jessie James?

The Jessie James bloodline is one of favorite Foundation Quarter Horses for several reasons:

1-Jessie James himself was a Grand Champion at cutting, reining and halter, much like his contemporary and stablemate Poco Bueno.

2- In addition to this, however, we have found that the Jessie James-bred horse is very easy to handle and the easiest to train of the Foundation Quarter Horses we've worked with.

3- The Jessie James quarter horse has the original Foundation Quarter Horse bulldog build, but Jessie James himself was a full hand taller than most of his contemporaries. Which means you get the brains, hardiness, and common sense of a Foundation Quarter horse plus a taller animal.

4- At Wolter Ranch Foundation Quarter Horses, we believe that line breeding and even well-placed in-breeding can result in a superior animal. We also recognize that there are many who prefer a horse without so much line breeding. The Jessie James bloodlines traditionally have not been nearly as intensely line bred as other Foundation Quarter Horse families.

We’ve been raising ABCA registered Border Collie puppies in Texas for more than a decade.
Many of our border collies are from imported bloodlines, and all are large to medium dogs, with the longer, rough coat.
Our Border Collie puppies' parents are selected as breeding stock for their herding ability, good looks, and calm (for a border collie), people-friendly disposition.

Border Collie puppies are available most of the time. Check our Border Collie page for available puppies.
